New Movie: Nairobi Half Life
Nairobi Half Life directed by Kenya's David Tosh Gitonga has generated a lot of buzz since it premiered on August 31, 2012 in Nairobi. The movie is about a young aspiring character from upcountry Kenya who dreams of becoming an accomplished actor and decides to make his way to Nairobi to pursue his dream. He quickly finds out that making it in "Nairrobery" (as Nairobi is often called) comes down to survival by any means necessary. He is quickly drawn in to crime as he struggles to pursue his dream of becoming an actor.
The movie depicts a solid story, propelled by breathless chases, fist fights, and high emotion evoking scenarios that are the reality of the Nairobi Street life, where desperation permeates and survival is for the fittest. Joseph Wairimu who plays the lead character of "Mwas" does a stellar job of making the character believable and relatable. The cast is successful in humanizing the criminal element, as they brood about survival and in Mwas' case achieving his dreams. The movie evokes a wild range of emotions (from side splitting humor to heart breaking sadness) and keeps the audience engaged and entertained.
I am so proud of Kenyan film and the talent brewing in Africa right now. This is a must watch movie. Dont sleep on it!
